Twitter Post Character Counter

Twitter Post Character Counter, Checks how X weights your post, then switch to bio or DM counting when you need it. Drafts stay in your browser.

Posts use X’s weighted rules: links count as 23, emoji as 2, and many Unicode characters as 2. Bio and DM modes use a plain character count.

Post budget breakdown

Bars share one scale, with the active post limit as the full track. Categories are additive; tags and mentions are included in text.

Thread split

Long drafts are grouped by sentence and paragraph where possible. Each post stays within the selected limit; use the copy button to take a post or the whole thread.

Why the Twitter Post Character Counter is still relevant.

The main posts on X (formerly Twitter) have a limit of 280 weighted characters. There is no limit on the number of characters premium accounts can post, up to 25,000 characters. The total shown in a plain-text editor may differ, due to the use of weighted counting for links and Unicode text. This X (Twitter) character counter lets you know when you’ve reached the limit of characters you’re allowed to use in a Tweet.

In a word processor, every character is equivalent to one unit of measure, but with a counting on X, not all characters are equivalent. The number you see in a text editor is not often the number X uses, as it is rewritten before being measured. This tweet character counter works the same way, so that your draft will look the same as the composer will show.

How to count the 280 character limit.

The other characters all have a cost of 1. Any letter, number, punctuation mark or space is considered typed. Those exceptions are what get people wrong:

  • Links. X is a shortener that shortens each URL and treats it as a flat 23 characters, no matter how long the original URL is. A 90 character tracking link costs 23 and a neat 30 character link also costs 23.
  • Emoji. X has published rules for counting emoji sequences; these rules assign a weight of 2 to any sequence of emoji that is a single symbol or a joined family emoji.
  • Hashtags and mentions. These are counted as regular text. They’re not free, that’s why a wall of hashtags devours a post.
  • Unicode. A lot of Chinese, Japanese, Korean and other Unicode characters have a weight of 2. The official twitter-text parser uses the twitter platform’s character ranges.

Due to this weighting, it is possible for a draft to have a different number of visible code points than a X post. This tool uses the published twitter-text parser for post counts and uses a plain count for bios and DMs.

How to use this character counter

  1. Type or paste your post into the box. No submit button to click, the counters, progress bar and preview update on each key stroke.
  2. Select a field and limit. Post supports Free/ Premium limits, Bio and DM support their plain character limits.
  3. Keep an eye on the countdown. It changes colour from amber as you approach the limit and red as you go over it. The preview indicates the point at which the selected limit is reached.
  4. Check the breakdown. It displays a bar with weighted text, links, and emoji for every post that is included. Hashtags and mentions are included in text.
  5. Fix a long draft. Use Suggest trim for a draft of the desired size (first post).
  6. Copy and post. Copy post to raise the text back up in X, or in your scheduling tool of your choice.

Practical use cases

Before social media managers can set up a week’s worth of posts, they have to fit all of them in. In a founders announcement of a new product, the hook in the first line is what is desired, but not the link that pushes it over. When responding to customers, community managers should understand if there is space for a friendly sentence when a handle has been quoted and a link has been included. The counter is used by writers wishing to reuse a paragraph from a newsletter to determine how much to cut.

It’s also useful for job seekers when trying to edit a bio or a pinned post, or for anyone who has seen a well-crafted sentence fall behind an ellipsis. Working completely in your browser, drafts remain on your device.

Here are some pro tips for staying under 280

  • Introduce the subject with the point. Use the most relevant words first, to make a “cropped” post readable.
  • Maintain only one thought per post. If you need two, you probably have a thread.
  • On most, use two or three hashtags. More than that is spam and will cost you money.
  • A shortened link won’t decrease the total number of weighted links: X means each unique recognized URL is counted as 23 characters. A clean link may be even more trustworthy.
  • Shorten sentences and phrases — “because” can be changed to “since”, or “in order to” can be changed to “to”.
  • Break sentences with line breaks to separate ideas; each line break is a character.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is relying on the word processor’s count. Does not use X’s URL and Unicode weights. Hidden Characters and Smart Quotes will be included in your total. The attached media is not part of the text budget of the post; the other fields (poll answers, for example) have their own limits.

FAQ

What is the maximum number of characters that can be used in a tweet?

Standard Posts: 280 weighted characters. Eligible X Premium accounts can publish longer posts, up to 25,000 characters. To see the corresponding limit, select Free or Premium in Post mode.

Every URL with X is transformed and given a fixed weight of 23 characters – irrespective of how long they appear on screen.

Do hashtags take up part of the 280 character limit?

Yes. Hashtags and @mentions count as any other text. They have a limited use for reach but add characters to your message each time you add one.

Are emoji more than 1 character?

X’s published rules give a weight of 2 to emoji sequences. A joined family emoji is not included as individual code points.

What is the maximum number of characters for X and DM?

There’s a 160 character bio limit, and a 10,000 character DM limit. For a simple character counter use Bio or DM mode.

Yes. There is no sign-up, no limit and no watermark. All of it is executed in your browser, and no one you type anything is uploaded.
