- Caption length within 2,200 characters
- 30 or fewer hashtags
- Key message appears in the first 125 characters
Where your caption would break
Bar length shows how far your text reaches into each Instagram field limit. A full bar means that field would reject or truncate the text.
Caption preview — what shows before “more”
Instagram cuts the visible caption at roughly 125 characters on most feed layouts. Everything after that sits behind the “more” link.

How the Instagram caption character counter works
The counter is based on the pasted text. It compares the text in the caption to Instagram’s 2200 character limit for a single feed caption. Next to that headline number it reports the numbers that decide the success of a caption – word count, line break count, count of the number of hashtags and the first 125 characters that show before the link that say “more”.
The character count doesn’t just mean the number of letters you see! Like most JavaScript-based tools, Instagram is using UTF-16 code units. If you have a message such as a caption with twenty emoji, it will take 20 code units or 40 characters on the string, as opposed to a straightforward visual estimate. Curly quotes and the ellipsis are counted as one.
Line breaks are also counted, as Instagram keeps them: every time you press return, an additional character is added. A hook line, three benefit lines and a hashtag block can add up to 10 or more formatting characters to a caption. The tool displays the number of lines separately, to allow you to see what portion of your budget is structural.
The simple rule for detecting hashtags is that they start with a hash, followed by letters, numbers or underscore. This maintains the count near what Instagram considers a tag, and it won’t count a hash that’s used as a punctuation. The following checklist will convert all of these signals into three simple pass/fail tests; you can correct the caption without performing any arithmetic.

Instagram character limits vs. Facebook.
While the limit of 2200 characters is the most common limit hit, it’s not the only one. There are 150 characters in Instagram’s bio and 30 characters for a username. These are the numbers that the platform uses if you attempt to save a change. T
he exception is hashtags—there were a maximum of 30 per post documented, and some users find that more hashtags work well for their particular content, but Instagram has stated that too many can appear as a spam post. A conservative rule of thumb is to use 30 as the limit.
| Field | Maximum | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Caption or comment | 2,200 characters | Spaces, punctuation and line breaks count. |
| Bio | 150 characters | Keep the profile description brief and scannable. |
| Username | 30 characters | Instagram usernames also have character and format rules. |
| Hashtags per post | 30 hashtags | A separate tag limit, not extra caption capacity. |

A caption check that exceeds the character limit
Most basic counters have a number to which they stop. It also displays how many hashtags and line breaks you have used, whether you’re hitting the 30 hashtag limit and compares your draft length with the bio and usernames limits. This can be a good option for cutting down a caption, and to tell when a text is too lengthy to use in another Instagram box.
Using a caption counter when to use it
There is no doubt that a live counter can be useful for anyone who has an Instagram account. If you’re a social media manager who has to write a week’s worth of captions at once, you have to make sure that all of the posts are roughly the same length. You may find that small business owners are running long and adding product information and prices without realising it — notes apps don’t show the total. Bloggy creators who try to turn the paragraph into a caption are often on target for the end of the selection and have to delete their final words instead of which they must add words at the beginning.
It is also helpful in the reverse situation. The preview checker will be able to tell you that if your captions are within the 125 character limit, but engagement has not improved, that your hook is too far into the caption.
Pro tips for captions that fit and perform
- Front-load the hook. Suppose that only first 125 characters are read. Place the promise, the question or the punch line in there and let the other details follow.
- Deliberate line breaks. Short lines are less difficult to read, but are counted as a character. Avoid taking a break because of routine.
- Do not loosen the hashtag block. Typically 10-15 relevant tags will outperform 30 loose ones, and there will be more space available for the caption itself.
- Count Down Emoji Before You Commit. Decorative emoji can suck up 20 or 30 characters without you ever realizing that you used them.
- Write in plain text, then. Over inflated counts occur if copied or pasted directly from a word processor as it does so, it copies in curly quotes and non-breaking spaces.
- Leave some space for breathing. Keep it to 2100 characters and not 2200; that way, you won’t be forced to edit at the last minute.
FAQ
How many characters are there in a Instagram caption?
The number of characters in captions for Instagram can reach 2,200 characters, and the same goes for Reels captions. When you pass it, the Instagram doesn’t silently cut the content off, so the counter will flash red before you do that.
Before “more” how many characters do you see?
About 125 characters on most layouts, about two lines on a phone. The cut differs slightly depending on the device and the text, so use 125 as a guideline and place the most critical words well within the cut.
Are emoji included as a single character?
No. Instagram uses UTF-16 code units to count captions, which means that most emoji take up 2 spaces. A caption with many emoji can count for several (family sequences, flag sequences, etc., are examples of emoji with skin-tone modifiers or zero-width joiners that can count for several emoji).
How many hashtags do I need to use?
Instagram allows hashtags in posts up to 30.The tool highlights hashtags in posts that exceed 30. A small number, 5-15 descriptive tags is preferable over a wall of generic tags; it frees up more character space for the caption.
The limit of the caption also applies to the comments and bios?
There is a maximum level for each field. Comments can be a maximum of 2,200 characters; bios are limited to 150 characters; and usernames are limited to 30 characters. You can compare your text to all three on the chart above to check if there are any text that is being reused in the wrong field.
Can I retrieve my caption text?
No. This counter is 100% browser based (requires JavaScript). No data is sent to a server or logged, so you can safely copy/paste client information and unreleased product information.
