Does California have a state income tax?
Yes. Under Revenue and Taxation Code section 17041, wage income is taxed at nine different rates in California. The schedule begins with a 1% rate on the first $11,079 of taxable income, rising to a 12.3% top rate; and the rate of 1% Mental Health Services Tax also applies to the amount of taxable income over $1 million, resulting in a 13.3% top combined marginal rate. No rollback tax, like Texas and Florida have.
A simplified 3-band version of that schedule is used in the calculator on this page: 1%, 7.15% and 13.3%. It assumes that the California standard deduction is $5,540 per person (for a single filer in the 2026 data) and that there is no local income tax (since California cities and counties do not tax wages). This is the amount your employer withholds, using the FTB’s own schedules – use a close estimate.
How California take-home pay is calculated
- Gross pay. Your salary (or hourly rate x hours worked) in the pay period you chose.
- Pre-tax deductions. The income that California and federal tax is levied on is reduced by the income that is paid out to cover 401(k), HSA, and health premiums.
- California income tax. The state standard deduction is taken and the rest of the earnings are taxed at California’s graduated rates (13.3% for over $1 million, due to the mental health tax).
- Federal income tax. Federal standard deduction is used, then the federal marginal brackets.
- FICA. Social Security (6.2% on up to the wage base) and Medicare (1.45%) taxes plus the extra Medicare tax for earned income above the threshold (0.9%).
- California SDI. New separate State payroll tax of 1.3% on wages, no cap in 2026. Not yet deducted by this calculator, it is used to provide Disability Insurance and Paid Family Leave.
The outcome is your net pay for the period you chose. The pay frequency matters: If you pay employees twice a month, you are making 26 payments a year, whereas if you pay semi-monthly, you are making 24 payments a year, and so on.
Worked example: $75,000 in California
A single filer earning $75,000 a year, paid bi-weekly in 2026:
| Line | Per paycheck |
|---|---|
| Gross pay | $2,884.62 |
| Federal income tax | $295.00 |
| Social Security | $178.85 |
| Medicare | $41.83 |
| California state income tax | $155.53 |
| Net take-home pay | $2,213.41 |
That is $57,548.61 a year, an effective tax rate of about 23.3%. Change the inputs in the calculator above to see your own numbers.
How California compares
Since California has one of the highest state income taxes in the nation, a paycheck in California is not quite as high compared to a state without a wage tax like Texas, Florida, Washington or Nevada. The graduated rates in California are also higher at the highest end of the income spectrum than the flat-tax rates of Pennsylvania (3.07%) or Illinois (4.95%).
Unlike in other high-tax states, no city or county levy is imposed on top of California’s state income tax; this means that employees in San Francisco and Los Angeles do not have to pay a local wage tax like in New York City or Philadelphia. The state still does collect SDI, however, at 1.3% of wages, a tax that is not capped and has no cap since 2024.

FAQ
Are there income taxes in California?
Yes. Under the Revenue and Taxation Code, section 17041, wage income is taxed on a sliding scale from 1% up to 12.3% with an additional 1% Mental Health Services Tax on income above $1 million.
Why is my Texas paycheck still taxed if there is no state income tax?
Because federal taxes still apply. Federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%), and Medicare (1.45%) are withheld from every Texas paycheck. The absence of a state income tax removes only the state line, not the federal ones.
What are the withholding taxes on a $75,000 income in California?
For 2026, a single filer paid biweekly takes home about $2,213.41 per paycheck from a $75,000 salary: $2,884.62 gross, $155.53 California income tax, $295.00 federal income tax, $178.85 Social Security, and $41.83 Medicare. That’s followed by California SDI of 1.3% (around $37.50).
What is the current California SDI tax rate?
State Disability Insurance for 2026 is withheld at 1.3% in California. There is no wage cap since Jan. 1, 2024, meaning SDI will cover 100% of an employee’s wages. The Disability Insurance and Paid Family Leave programs are funded with SDI dollars.
Is there a local income tax on wages in California’s cities or counties?
There is no local income tax in California, with no city wage tax like New York City or Philadelphia has. The state of California, however, gets local revenue from sales and property taxes.
What is the highest tax rate in California?
For a marginal income tax rate, the highest rate in California is 12.3% on income of more than $742,953 for a single person. The top marginal rate is also 13.3% for taxable income over $1 million because of the 1% Mental Health Services Tax.
Does California have an income tax standard deduction?
Yes. A standard deduction is allowed in lieu of itemized deductions in California. The data here is for 2026 for one filer and is $5,540. Most filers don’t have a personal exemption, but rather a dependent exemption credit.
How is a California employee withholding?
California employees complete Form DE 4 with their employers to establish withholding of state income taxes. The form no longer contains withholding allowances and has been updated to reflect dollar amounts since 2020, in addition to the federal Form W-4.
Does paid family leave go off the top of a California paycheck?
There’s no PFL deduction because No. California Paid Family Leave (PFL) is paid for by the SDI tax. The one percent (1.3%) SDI line is for Disability Insurance and Paid Family Leave.
